31 - On the Road Again

“Ijust don’t understand why she couldn’t come with us,” Slash said, trotting along beside me.

“You can hear my conversations with Fortune, right?” I tried to stifle my frustration. This was the third time over the last mile that he’d asked why Kira couldn’t come. “You heard what she said.”

“No, I didn’t. I stopped listening a long time ago. About the time Kira moved in with us. She’s way more entertaining than your boring chats with Fortune.” He stopped, stood on his hind legs, and waved his paws in the air while his head lolled. In a voice that I think was supposed to mimic mine, he said, “Oh, Fortune, I’m your bestie. Whatever you need, I’ll be here for you because I’m yet another guy with a savior complex. Please let me help you.”

“So you have been listening?”

He huffed. “Not that I wanted to.”

“Anyway, she can’t come because this is our quest, wee man.”

“We couldn’t even bring Lady Sparklehoof. Darkworld is so stuuuuuuuuupid,” he said, his tiny mouth forming a little ‘o’ shape.

“I know. But it’s better that she’s not here. Remember, her hooves sparkle. That might cause problems. Plus, she’s a pony, and this could be dangerous. It needs someone brave like you. Now, keep it down. We don’t need to draw attention.”

“Maybe we should, because then I could tell them to their big ugly faces how stupid of a quest this is.”

As adorable as his petulance was, it wasn’t helpful as we readied ourselves. Since BigDk purchased the quest, forcing us to complete it, I fully expected a surprise at some point. Our butcher would do everything in his power to make this difficult.

I couldn’t say I was happy that he was back in the game.

We were headed due east. The mountain range had fallen behind us, lost in the wall of forest greenery. We hadn’t been out this way. New territory. Troublesome as it was, I still hoped this quest wasn’t more than the log said. All we had to do was fill in a couple of potholes and be on our way. Our only hint that trouble might be brewing was the fact that the quest log mentioned the Naga Raiders had created the damage to stunt trade. The passing mention of the Scalefolk already had me expecting their continued involvement.

Around the looping bend in the wide dirt road, we got our answer. We wouldn’t be filling potholes. If we were lucky, we might return home.

I knew something was wrong as soon as we began around the bend. At first, the signs were subtle but quickly became more obvious. With each step, it was apparent what was happening.

The forest had thinned on both sides of the road, but this was no natural occurrence. Rough stones stood as nature’s testimony to the crimes committed against it. I pride myself on my situational awareness, a remnant of my military training that I still held to this day. But I will admit that it took me a few yards to understand I wasn’t seeing what remained of a severe wind storm.
